Why West-Facing Windows in Singapore Get So Hot (And What Actually Works)

Every property agent in Singapore knows the question: "Which way does it face?" A west-facing unit routinely trades at a discount to an identical east-facing one, and anyone who has lived behind west glass knows why. The living room is fine at 11am, uncomfortable by 2pm, and still radiating heat at 9pm. This article explains the physics of why west windows are the worst case, why the usual fixes disappoint, and what actually stops the heat.

The 12pm to 5pm build-up

Singapore sits almost on the equator, so the sun rises close to due east and sets close to due west all year round. There is no "winter sun angle" to design around; a west facade gets hit every single afternoon.

The timing is what makes it brutal. Morning sun on an east window arrives when outdoor air is still relatively cool, around 27–28°C, and the flat has been shedding heat all night. Afternoon sun on a west window arrives from roughly 12pm onward, stacking direct radiation on top of a 32–33°C peak outdoor temperature and a building that has already been absorbing heat for six hours. By 4pm the sun is low enough to shine under any overhead ledge and deep into the room, hitting floors, sofas and walls directly.

Then the sun sets, but the room does not cool. Concrete, tiles and furniture that spent five hours absorbing radiation release it slowly through the evening. This is why a west-facing bedroom can still feel stuffy at midnight and why the aircon in that room works the hardest in the house.

What is actually coming through the glass

Sunlight is not just light. Of the solar energy reaching your window, roughly half arrives as visible light and roughly half as infrared radiation in the 780–2500nm band, with a small slice of ultraviolet. Infrared is invisible, but it is the part you feel as heat on your skin when you stand near the glass.

Ordinary clear glass is nearly transparent to this entire package. Worse, glass then traps what enters: sunlight passes through, gets absorbed by surfaces inside, and is re-emitted as long-wave heat that cannot radiate back out through the glass. That is the greenhouse effect, and it is why a closed west-facing room can run hotter than the air outside it.

So the problem has two parts: radiation streaming in through the glass, and the room's inability to release it. Any real solution has to stop the energy before it gets inside.

Why curtains and blinds disappoint

Blackout curtains are the default response, and they do block glare. But look at where the heat ends up. Sunlight passes through the glass, hits the curtain fabric, and is absorbed. The curtain becomes a warm radiator hanging inside your room, and the air trapped between curtain and glass heats up like a narrow greenhouse, then leaks around the edges into the room. The heat has already crossed the building envelope; the curtain just delays and redistributes it.

External shading works because it intercepts sunlight before the glass, which is exactly why it is nearly impossible to get approved on a high-rise facade. Solar film achieves the same interception at the glass surface itself, from the inside.

Blocking heat at the glass line

Spectrally selective solar film exploits the fact that light and heat occupy different wavelengths. A nano-ceramic film can be tuned to reflect and absorb the infrared band while letting a chosen fraction of visible light pass. For west glass, go dark: Meridian 15

On north or east elevations there is a genuine trade-off discussion between lighter and darker films. On west glass there usually is not. The radiation load is the highest your home faces, and afternoon glare through west windows is severe enough that a light film leaves you closing the curtains anyway, which defeats the purpose.

The aircon angle

Because the heat that entered during the afternoon was absorbed by concrete walls, tiles and furniture, which release it slowly for hours after sunset. Do blackout curtains reduce heat from west sun?

Only slightly, and at the cost of a dark room. The sunlight has already passed through the glass before it hits the curtain, so the curtain absorbs the energy and re-radiates it inside your home. Curtains are effective for glare and privacy but are the wrong tool for heat, because they act after the building envelope has been breached.
